It’s Super Bowl weekend! Have you finalized your Super Bowl party plans? Got the chips? Dip? Chili? Is there a football game this weekend during the Super Bowl ad broadcast? Pittsburgh something or rathers and the Green Bay whatchamacallits? The Super Bowl ad extravaganza looks loaded this year with ads from Pepsi, Bud Light, GM, Disney, Sony, Mercedes and many others putting out their biggest ads of the year.

And if you own an iPhone, go grab the AdBowl app to keep up to date and vote on your favourite ads while on the go!

Some of the classic ads that aired during previous games include the famous Apple 1984 ad, Mean Joe Greene’s Coke ad, the Bird vs. Jordan McDonalds ads and last years hilarious Betty White Snickers ad. Take a look at some of the best ads from the past 13 years.

One of the most remembered and iconic Super Bowl ads ever was the Apple ad for the introduction of the first Macintosh computer in 1984. In a recent article by AdWeek, they discuss how the ad came to be.

“The brief for “1984” was simple: Steve Jobs said, “I want to stop the world in its tracks.

They also bust the myth that the ad only aired once on the Super Bowl. It aired in other places, times and in different lengths.

That only the Super Bowl version is remembered gives you an idea of the importance of the right media buy—and the power of a 60- vs. 30-second spot.”

Another key insight to take away form the 1984 campaign was the followup after the ad.

“When Jobs and Apple CEO John Sculley finally saw the rough cut of the spot, Jobs said, “This is going to cause an information vacuum. We’ve got to fill that vacuum with the real story.” So he ordered up a 20-page insert for Time and Newsweek, as well as a series of product spots highlighting what was different about the Mac from all the other green screen computers of the era.”

Is the Super Bowl still relevant for large ad buys in todays fragmented world? In certain cases, I think it is still the best way to get your message across. With a great ad and a spectacular followup campaign using Social Media the Super Bowl might actually be a bargain in todays fragmented market. What do you think?

And no Super Bowl ad talk is complete without talking about the brilliant campaign by Reebok featuring Triple T, the Terrible Terry Tate – number 56 in your program, number 1 in your heart – Terry Tate – Office Linebacker.
